So, how to proceed to finally get rid of this kind of painting?

  1. Take off any furniture.
  2. Turn off the electricity for the room in which you are going to be removing the popcorn.
  3. Remove any device from your ceiling, such as smoke alarms.
  4. Cover the floor with plastic or with old and useless papers. This is mainly for the dust.

The steps to remove popcorn ceiling

Get a ladder, and position it in a way that you can work to the side or in front of it, not over your head, this is very important so your head will not get dust. You can also protect your head with plastic if you want to.

Now, there are two options:

  • a. Your popcorn ceiling was painted and
  • b. your popcorn ceiling is not painted.

For the first case, the water and detergent mix will not be absorbed by your painted popcorn ceiling, so just start with scrapping.

If your popcorn ceiling was never painted, you will need to use a sprayer. With this one you are going to spray a mixture of water and liquid detergent (1 cup of detergent and 5 gallons of water). Then your are going to remove the popcorn ceiling with it.

After you have the sprayer prepared, start using it over the ceiling one or 2 times to fully cover it.

Now wait about 20 minutes. Then you can begin with the scraping.

Safety stuff to have in mind using the removal

When removing your popcorn ceiling, you should protect yourself with safety glasses so your eyes don“t get dust. Your hair could also be covered with a plastic bag or paper (not your entire head, just your hair).

Also, remove every children from the room of your popcorn ceiling.
